Stephen Wilkinson

The composer Stephen Wilkinson was born in Eversden Rectory, Cambridgeshire, in 1919. He was a choirboy at Oxford Cathedral, and Organ Scholar at Queens' Cambridge, interrupted by war service. A long and varied career in music has followed, including over 30 years as Conductor of the BBC Northern Singers (Proms, Edinburgh & Aldeburgh Festivals, international tours, acclaimed LPs) and nearly 40 with the William Byrd Singers of Manchester. His compositions span some 80 years; since his retirement aged 90 he has dedicated more time to these. He has produced two volumes of solo songs, one of carol arrangements, one of choral folksong arrangements, and many other works. A full list of works can be found on this page, many with free downloadable scores. A CD of his choral music, Dover Beach, was released in 2012, and a CD of his solo songs, The Sunlight on the Garden, with singers Mhairi Lawson, Clare Wilkinson, James Gilchrist & Matthew Brook and pianists Ian Buckle and Anna Markland, in 2017. Two songs arranged for voice & viols have been recorded by Clare Wilkinson and Fretwork on their CD The Silken Tent. Stephen embarked in his 90s on a new career as reader with Courtiers of Grace, with whom he appeared at the Trigonale Festival (Austria), and the Brighton, York & Cambridge Early Music Festivals. For further information, contact Clare Wilkinson. More information about Stephen here. Please let us know of any performances of Stephen's works. We are extremely grateful to David Toms for his excellent typeset editions, and for permission to use them here.
